III (a). Scientologists specify the spiritual essence of mankind as the "thetan," which amounts the traditional idea of the spirit.


The reactive mind is thought to preserve engrams that return to the fetal state and get to further back even into previous lives. The theological concept of "engrams" bears close similarity to the Buddhist doctrine of the "strings of complexity" which are held over from previous incarnations and which hamper the achievement of knowledge.
